In this sculpture, the pregnant female figure stands as the axis of the world, hands resting on her belly, watched over by two resting bulls. It evokes the “Ladies of the Animals” of Neolithic times — primordial images in which woman is the centre of symmetry, creative force and principle of order. The red oxide that grounds the work recalls the ritual pigment of the earliest female representations, a symbol of blood, earth and life. It is a presence that comes from afar, just in its essence, true in its form, heir to a memory older than history.
