The earliest accounts we have of the Balearic slingers belong to the following period, known as the post-Talayotic (550–123 BCE), in the context of their participation in various military conflicts across the Mediterranean.

This is the chronological framework in which this work, Gimnèsia, is situated, drawing on references from the poem Alexandra, written by Lycophron of Chalcis between 270 and 260 BCE. History and legend converge in this work involving Cassandra, daughter of Hecuba and Priam, king of Troy. Cassandra, gifted with the power of prophecy but also cursed never to be believed, foretold the fall of her father’s city, and also that, in their flight, some Greeks would reach rocky islands called the Gymnesiae. There they would live in misery, naked and armed with slings, and there mothers would teach their children, fasting, the art of throwing; and they would not eat bread unless they had first knocked it from the top of a pole with a sling-stone.

With this reference, beyond those that have traditionally brought to light the exclusively masculine aspects of this Balearic prehistoric culture, I would like to emphasise the courage, firmness and persistence of those mothers and daughters. Gimnèsia, from her watchtower, scans the horizon, perhaps feigning calm, just on the point of sending the stone flying, beyond the blue sea.

[65,57
post-1789","trabajo","type-trabajo","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2019-2023","category-metal
["GET
